For Clients

Starting is the hardest part. I’ll make it simple.

If you’re here, you’ve already taken a meaningful step. Here’s exactly what to expect, how we’ll begin, and how to make therapy work for your life, whether we meet in Reno or online.

What to Expect

A space that’s practical, judgment-free, and built around what works for you.

Therapy with me isn’t about labeling anything right or wrong. It’s about understanding what’s really going on and building tools you can actually use. I keep the work grounded and practical, so you leave sessions with something useful, not just something to think about.

You don’t need to have the right words or a clear plan before you reach out. Bringing what feels messy and unfinished is exactly the point. We’ll sort through it together, at your pace.

How We Begin

Three simple steps

1

Reach out

Call or send a message through the contact form. Share a little about what’s bringing you in. There’s no pressure and nothing you need to prepare in advance.

2

Your first session

We’ll talk through what matters most to you and what you’d like to be different. This is about getting to know you, not filling out a checklist.

3

Move forward

From there, we build practical, Gottman-informed tools you can use in real life, for steady, sustainable change in your relationship or yourself.

Your First Session

Nervous about starting therapy? Here’s what to expect

If the thought of a first session makes you anxious, you’re in good company. Most people feel some nerves walking in, whether they’re coming on their own or as a couple. Here’s what actually happens, so there are no surprises.

It’s a conversation, not an interrogation

Your first therapy session is mostly about getting to know each other. I’ll ask what brought you in and what you’d like to feel differently, and you share as much or as little as you’re ready to. There’s no script to follow, no test to pass, and nothing you have to relive before you’re ready. We move at your pace, full stop.

You don’t need to prepare anything or arrive with the perfect words. Coming in unsure of where to start is completely normal, and sorting through it together is part of the work. By the end, we’ll have a sense of what matters most to you and a simple idea of where to go next.

The worries I hear most, gently answered

  • “What if I’m judged?” You won’t be. This is a practical, judgment-free space, and my job is to understand your situation, not grade it.
  • “What if I don’t know what to say?” That’s okay. I’ll help guide the conversation, and quiet moments are completely allowed.
  • “Is our problem even bad enough?” There’s no threshold you have to meet. If something is weighing on you or your relationship, that’s reason enough to come.
  • “What if only one of us wants to go?” For couples, it’s common to start with one partner more on board than the other, and we can still make real progress.

Whenever you’re ready, you can take the first step. If you’d like to see how couples therapy actually helps, I wrote about what the research shows.

Common Questions

Before you reach out

How do I start therapy?

Call 775.400.2834 or send a message through the contact form. We’ll set up a time to talk about what’s bringing you in and whether we’re a good fit.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. I see clients in person in Reno, Nevada, and offer secure telehealth across Nevada, Iowa, and Florida, so you can do meaningful work from wherever you’re most comfortable.

What insurance do you accept?

I’m in network with Lyra, United Healthcare, Aetna, Hometown Health, and Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS). If your plan isn’t listed, out-of-network and private-pay options (including cash) are available.

Is what I share confidential?

Therapy is confidential and protected by law. There are a few limited exceptions related to safety, and I’ll explain those clearly at the start of our work together so you always know where things stand.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is about getting to know you and what you’d like to work on. There’s nothing you need to prepare, and we move at your pace. If you have questions for me, that’s welcome too.

Is it normal to feel nervous before your first session?

Completely. Most people feel some nerves before a first therapy session, and there’s nothing you need to do about that. You can share as much or as little as you’re ready to, ask me anything, and set the pace. The nerves usually ease within the first few minutes.
